Nothing short of hyperbolic, Lisa Hazelwood’s website, vintageskins.com, is a plus-perfect collection of only vintage and antique exotic skin items. Lovely, artful purses, mostly alligator and crocodile, she also has sections dedicated to lizard and snakeskin and for lesser known such as ostrich, turtle, zebra, even frog. All bags are sorted by size of which the three main categories are purse/handbags, briefs/luggage, and accessories. Prolific are the names such as Lucille de Paris and Deitsch but on occasion, Saks, I. Magnin, and even a rare Tiffany & Co. or Bob Mackie pop up.
Browsing through each category, I knew that there really was no way to post just a few pictures from this site. I think there is at least over a hundred to choose. So, I decided to take the breadth versus depth approach and display a sampling. The website does not offer a quick search field, so one has to look at every item up for sale, akin to going to a brick and mortar storefront. The most astounding fact that I found on this site, is the fine condition of these items, either thanks to restoration or perhaps even to the delicate care rendered by previous owners (and many of them originate from the 1800’s). You will never see a bag here that looks like it’s been thrifted.
Take a walk down a fashionable memory lane. You may find an old dream spring back to life.
