It’s rare to see suede handbags carried these day, or displayed in advertisements, but that only means that for those of us who happen to love suede, it’s easier to scoop a beautiful one quickly. Let’s take a second here to admire the material. While some of you may consider it a con that suede shows dirt and rubbings so quickly, I happen to find this quirk exceptional. While vachetta or buffalo may weather very well and come to take on a patina, most leather bags gradually look dried out and the rubbed corners are a faded, ghosted reminder of what color it used to bear. Suede, on the other hand, gets darkened and matted, and strongly resembles the shiny, hardened well-used areas of a dressage saddle, or better yet, the worked sheen from a horse on trot. The heady scent emanating from suede is neither cloying nor musty, but a welcoming atmospheric presence like the heavy-handed cloves and anise permeating a kitchen during the holiday season. Carrying suede is akin to bringing an old friend who knows how to address you no matter your mood, softly flexing to mirror your moves and comforting you during times of stress with tactical salve.
