So, you say, “It’s just brown, what’s with the *chai* description?” Yes, it’s brown, but I think lately, this shade of brown is more prevalent. It’s not a rich brown, like an ‘espresso’ brown or a ‘chocolate’ brown. There aren’t any warm red undertones lurking. At first sight, these bags can be described as teak-ish or ochre-ish. This is a stark contrast and ironic to what was hyped earlier this season. At the beginning of the fall, there was an inundation of advertisements about going structured, because menswear is in and the kelly shape is going to prevail. Yet, with just a few months in, we have, viola, a full-throttle bohemian wonderland. I’m not complaining, because no matter how much I prefer structured bags, these are refreshing to the eye even if they weren’t meant to be so. Their dark tones appear hand-steeped in cloves, cardamom, and allspice and minimally wiped so that heavy saturations appear in recesses and nooks like the seams. The obviously relaxed bag-like shape encourages an equally loose silhouette, i.e., foregoing darts and tailoring in favor of a wide belt cinching in a swell of a dress in raw silk.
