Cynthia Rowley advocates opposites. Her day clothes look fit for cocktails. Her evening clothes with their flirtatious lines signify anything but somber. This play of counter and counter-point is the base of her “cool chick” appeal, universally irresistible when encountered on her website, on the telly (episode 4 of Tim Gunn’s show and on the past season’s Shear Genius), or for those lucky enough to be near one of her boutiques, in real life. Her clothes are cut for a woman with some curves, but they are tailored to transform her into an ingenue– as in likes of Cyd Charisse, not Hepburn. Another contrast: Silkened, luxe fabrics in the primary or earth-toned jewels are pieced together to give a playful feminine touch fit for the Ms., but they do not spiral dangerously down the path of little girl chic as to make her line a caricature. Nipped at the waist, easy metered flows off the hips or controlled proportions to equalize the width of shoulder and hips accentuate the best of an hourglass and allay the conscience from forming doubts about visible swells. Her Fall line presents a sunset view of the Left Bank scenery that she presented in her Spring 2008 line.
