A little black dress needs a little black bag as an escort for upcoming chit-chat and feasting parties. Clutches are so de rigueur, and I prefer mine to offer limbs the quick mobility to grab finger food, a wine glass and my child’s hand at arm’s length. A cocktail bag should be so stylishly versatile that it can elevate a jeans and cardigan moment in addition to meld seamlessly with the little Hepburn number. The definitively angular shaped ones appeal to me first as they present an absolute formality, which is a requisite feature for looking fabulous without effort. Snippets of metalwork provide sublime elegance, and so we have chains, decorative clasps and kiss lock closures flirting about the leather. All of these posted clutch shapes have revered positions in the past, but, of course, they are visibly updated. Jill Stuart’s 70’s-light designs hint of Halston’s Studio 54 days, but it’s not heavy handed. The framed bags by Isabella Fiore and Dutchy are modernized with diagonal lines to create movement. And, finally, the Hayden Harnett bohemian beauty is just plain pretty without being saccharin sweet. Okay, where are those hors d’oeuvres???
