Forgive me for putting up images of handbags of such varying themes, as it might seem like I am a bit overzealous or even unfocused. But, I have my reasons. One, I just love it when people cross over disciplines. To me, I find it oozing with creativity when I see how theory and application in one field of study is translated into another. Pauric Sweeney, a trained architect, moved over to the fashion industry a few years ago, first in jewelry then to clothes and handbags. It is probably a reasonable progression, working slowly away from his comfort zone playing with hard, comparatively rigid material to the flexibility of cloth.

Second reason, it makes me feel giddy. I get it because I see the designer’s excitement to try on ALL kinds of fabric, as if each material represents a different personality, and as such, the handbags emanate a different feel and usage. And, most notably, how he takes advantage of each by either illuminating its natural endowment or exploring the relationship between them. So we can see that while we may understand that good leather is highly mutable as in that Suede Bag, it is the deliberate pleating of it that makes this obvious. Another case, even though the Python Centre Bag and the Python Ostrich Bag share the same snake skin, the former is no nonsense like work tote may be characterized, while the latter is playful and rather insouciant for after work, because of its pairing to differently treated leathers. I feel when I look at all these bags, it’s like seeing members of the same family, but each one markedly different with their own unique point of view.

Finally, I love the stance: one foot lightly treading the past, one foot firmly planted into the future. I see remnants of bygone architectural influences. This is where I start drooling over the Star Quilted Bag. The most common of geometric patterning amassed in medieval Cairo, ancient Byzantine or Sassanian civilisations still abound, alive, pulsating.
