I went for coffee with a friend of mine whom I met at the playground where our kids go to school. Like me, she is a thrifty shopper, looking for relatively inexpensive bargains without sacrificing quality and brand. In the course of the conversation, we started to talk about handbags. She was admiring one of numerous Kate Spades which I happened to be carrying that morning. I asked her what she liked and she rattled off a few names such as Michael Kors and Kenneth Cole NY. She paused and then said that she did splurge on one item. $1,400 on a Louis Vuitton. She LOVES it. I should’ve guessed. It doesn’t matter where in the stratosphere you lie, the most coveted brand is likely to be in your arsenal. All that savings from shopping at Marshalls and Loehmanns are readily handed over for one bag. I have to say that I don’t own a Vuitton yet because I haven’t found the one that I really want. I am not too big on logos and I actually shy away from “It” bags. Too much to pay to be just ubiquitous and pedestrian. The only one I think I would really, really want is a Hermes (but who doesn’t???!!!) and honestly, I’d rather spend that much at Tiffany & Co. for a watch (which I’m saving for). But, as a challenge, I went to eLuxury, a portal for the LVMH Group (who owns Vuitton among others) to see if there was anything that would tempt me to abandon my initial purchasing intentions. I think I did with the LV Damier Trevi Satchel. It’s got all the parts of a desirable luxe handbag and satisfys my personal checklist for a great bag: trademark print (without screaming it), acute attention to detail, sizeable storage capacity (16 x 12 x 8″), constructed 1960-ish look. I love to carry handbags by hand but in reality, it isn’t always the most convenient, and this offers a solution to both. It’s for $1,800. Yikes. Well, the good news is that my husband thinks it gorgeous too, so that’s one hurdle down.
