While the weather is still hot, I should be enjoying it, but honestly, my mind is definitely on Fall. Amidst thoughts of leaves turning, apple picking, and cleaning the flue of our fireplace (yes, all three events do happen up here in the CA high desert), I’m thinking of going to Europe. It’s not going to happen, I know. The closest I’m going to get is a trip to Disneyland until the kids are old enough to appreciate the cultural landscape. Nevertheless, like dreaming about what to do with all that money if I won the lottery, I dream about places to see and outfits to wear.
My next stop would be France to the City of Lights and breeding ground of Impressionism. Some people love modern art, some people don’t, but no matter where the line is drawn, all appreciate the Impressionists’ vigilance to represent the effects of light on matter. Their contribution has modified our aesthetic eye, integrating fully with the knowledge of color juxtaposition. We know what’s primary, and we see the difference between complimentary and complementary color. We shop by it! Here’s an ensemble to show my admiration for these mavericks, plus a special shout-out to Manet, who never abandoned the use of black.
