For those of you living in the U.S., I wish you a happy Labor Day. Most of you are probably enjoying the last visage of summer by taking a trip to the beach or picnicking in the park. I’m home doing laundry, preparing school supplies for the girls, and surfing for sales. The last is a die-hard habit. We all know that this long weekend brings offerings of deeper discounts as an incentive to buy. I first hit Kate Spade, one of my favorite haunts, to see what’s going on. I wasn’t disappointed, as there were plenty of tasty bits. I found on sale, with newly lowered prices from last week, the Francis and Julia lines that I’ve been eyeing since they were first introduced.
It took a little while for me to warm up to them, since I wasn’t initially head-over-heels in love. As time passed, it became obvious that I really wanted one. I just couldn’t forget the shape. To do justice to their namesake, the typical contour and accoutrements of the tote have been tweaked to emulate the charm of the neighborhoods. Hudson Street in NY and Pasadena, CA, a city that I intimately know, have a mix of the bucolic and the urban, which is ideal for strolling, with a cup of coffee and a croissant, before finding a cool boutique to pop your head in for a look-see. The rounded edges, short hand-held straps and the counterpoint usage of grainy and waxed leather deliver panache, and they aid the functional tote to transcend the banal.
