What happens, in design, when one renders away the recognizable. What is left may only be the suggestiveness of nature. More than likely, even the suggestiveness is hardly discernible. More than likely, what is left defies our concept of logic and relationship. What is left exists in its own internal logic and relationship.
When we look at a floral printed dress, we may be inclined to notice the blossoms, and perhaps even to compare them to something actual seen in our gardens, parks, or in passing on our way to work. At the other end of the viewing experience, when we look at this dress by Zac Posen, can we really make out anything representational? Devoid of familiar cues, we focus on the color, the folds, the elaborate dips and twists seen from behind. We also look at this dress in relation to the accompanying articles of clothing. Again, noticing the curves (s-curves, c-curves, hmmm…), ruffles, matteness, glossiness. Stylized, memorable, and guaranteed to knock ‘em dead.
